Spinal cord injury (SCI) is one of the most serious types of injury you can suffer in an auto accident. While SCI is serious enough on its own, the reality is that it often occurs along with other serious injuries such as brain injury or pelvis injuries, making for a much more complicated recovery and uncertain prognosis. There is not yet a cure for SCI, but dedicated researchers are making progress every day. Full compensation for your spinal cord injury can help you gain access to the most advanced treatments and the best possible quality of life after SCI. Sheridan & Rund PC can help.
Symptoms of Spinal Cord Injury
Immediate treatment of spinal cord injuries prevents the damage from worsening and increases the chance of a better outcome. Sometimes spinal cord injuries are obvious right away, but in some cases symptoms are delayed. Spinal cord injury symptoms can look like symptoms of other injuries and conditions, especially when there is other serious trauma involved. Doctors do not always consider and look for SCI. It may be a soft tissue injury, so it does not show up on X-rays, and it can happen in the absence of broken vertebrae, so there may be no direct indication of SCI.
Symptoms of spinal cord injury affect the body below the point of injury and can include:
- Pain, burning sensation, and/or numbness
- Muscle weakness or paralysis
- Inability to move arm and/or legs
- Inability to walk
- Inability to feel pressure, heat, or cold
- Complete loss of feeling in arms, legs or trunk
- Muscle spasms or spasticity
- Breathing problems
- Loss of bladder or bowel control
- Digestive problems
- Problems with heart rate and blood pressure
- Sexual dysfunction
