It’s a horrible thing to think about but as soon as a collision occurs, you have to start working on your own behalf. In the first few moments after an accident, your physical safety and your claim are at risk, and you are on your own. Even if you were not seriously injured, or did not suffer life-threatening injuries, you are at risk for being hit by vehicles arriving at the scene until first responders arrive and get traffic under control. And every interaction with the other driver, passengers and witnesses puts you at risk for damaging your auto accident claim for the compensation that you will need to pay for the costs of your injuries.
Each situation is unique. In most cases, the safest thing to do is stay in your vehicle. Move your vehicle out of the flow of traffic if you can. Getting out of your vehicle makes you more likely to get hit by cars that come upon the accident unaware, or to get hit by the damaged vehicles that they hit and send flying. At least if you are inside your car, you are more protected. Injuries must be considered as well. You do not want to make injuries worse by moving or trying to move an injured person. If you must get out of the vehicle, get well away from the road.
Avoid Interactions and Confrontations
If possible, avoid interacting with others at the scene until first responders arrive. After an accident, adrenaline is surging, and everyone reacts differently. Some get violent, even if they are to blame. Some swing the opposite direction and just start apologizing like crazy, even if they are not to blame. You’re dealing with strangers and you don’t know what they are going to do. If you’ve never been in that kind of situation, you don’t even know how you will react and either reaction can be big trouble for you. It can cost you your claim, and in rare cases it could land you in jail.
